Fresh off of '1967 Car of the Year' award, Mercury decided to keep the changes for '68 to a minimum. One of the new for '68 colors was this Augusta Green which was an immediate & obvious success. This XR-7 was top of the trim list and came well equipped.

With plenty of patina this is still a good looking car. The panels line up nicely and the bright trim is in good condition. When the car came to the clear coat had failed on the upper surfaces...and it looked quite sad, like a wet cat. We were stuck between a repaint or leaving it as is which required a repaint. We decided to go with a new approach used for overcoating old original paint using a specialized clear system. It checked all the boxes being able to encapsulate as well as provide UV protection with a long lasting high gloss finish. The car came out better than we thought possible. Take a look at the pics, they cover the good/bad/ugly highlighted to show it all. If you want a show car, this isn't it. If you want a classic you can get in and drive, guilt free, this just might be your next ride.

Rust wise, this one is quite solid. There are some bubbles as noted in the pictures. However, the floors appear to be rust free as do all the frame rails. There are some floor repairs on the driver's side but the work is sound and done with reproduction metal. The passenger quarter panel was replaced with an original quarter quite some time ago and the work appears to have been done at the seams, properly.

Inside, the interior shows quite well. At first blush it could pass as a nicely restored or low mile survivor. Look harder and flaws are seen, but it is still quite original with the exception of a new reproduction carpet kit. There is obvious wear from being 55 years old, but again, its presentable and any wear is more character than a flaw in my book.

Under the hood the 302 appears to have very low miles. It has been adorned with some mild performance upgrades like an MSD ignition system, headers, Edelbrock Aluminum Intake, 4 Barrel Carburetor, Long Tube Headers and more! It fires up incredibly easy and runs very strong. Cold starts are AMAZING! This thing actually fires up easier than our EFI cars cold! It's not a drag motor by any stretch, figure its an honest 300 horsepower. So its not high strung it just has plenty of power for a relatively light car. If you want to burn the tires, it can. If you want a parade lap on the cruise, it can.

The brake system was just treated to a new master cylinder and brake booster. The power steering system works nicely and the steering is tight & positive.

There really is a lot to like about this car if you are a car person. It has a ton of personality, it runs great, it drives great, it has great options. It has the obvious paint flaws and wear, but sometimes that is the point. A show car is like a trophy wife, it stays inside out of the elements & away from the fun. When it comes to fun, there is something to say for a thin shirt, worn jeans and dirt under her nails.
