Factory Black cars are amongst the most desirable of all Muscle Cars. They are hard to find and often there is a caveat, like they have been reconstituted from 3 other cars and a UPS truck of aftermarket sheet metal. This Chevelle has no such caveat.

This '68 Chevelle is a 138 VIN car so you know its an original SS396 car. From what we can see, every panel on this car appears to be the born-with original. This is also one of the most rust free original cars we have seen. If you are looking for a 'Keeper' this is what you have been likely looking for. The cowl tag lists this one as a color code A for Tuxedo Black and believe it or not a code 6 for a White Vinyl top. It gets even cooler though. This is a single repaint car and the door jams are still the original paint. When the car came to us it had no striping but upon inspection the tail ends of the factory red tape stripes were still on the door corners. We quickly seized on this and ordered up a set of reproductions and installed them. Which looks amazing. The current paint while quite presentable is older with some imperfections upon close inspection. We call this one a 5 footer. It's right on that border where you aren't going to park in just any parking lot but not too nice to stretch its legs on the highway for a summer cruise.

Under the hood the 396 is a correctly coded IA 1968 engine but the VIN stamping does not match the car. So era and code correct, just not a VIN match. The cylinder heads are a set of 1970 rectangle port open chamber units so they are pump gas friendly. The camshaft is a solid lifter unit so it has just a mild rhythm to the valvetrain. The intake manifold is an Edelbrock Performer RPM with an Edelbrock carburetor. Exhaust manifolds are in place so it has somewhat of a stock appearance. The Muncie M21 close ratio transmission works nicely. The 3.36 12-bolt rear is a great all around gear giving you plenty of power down low and a livable highway rpm. Power is pretty impressive so figure its around that 400 mark which gives you the best of performance without being too hot to run right.

The interior has front bucket seats and a floor shift console. This one was originally a bench and the conversion was done with factory parts so its clean. New front seat upholstery and carpet were installed. The rest of the interior appears to be largely original and in good condition with the exception of a split in the rear seat.

Take a good look at the pics. This one is one of the most solid Chevelles around. It still wears its original trunk spatter paint along with the original jack and hardware. The paint around the cowl is original with none of the normal rust associated with the breed. Definitely give us a call or drop a message if you are in the market. This is a good one.
