This 72 Challenger is a highly optioned and extremely solid example freshly out of sunny California. It has a really good look and is very well optioned. It runs well and sounds great. This one can be driven as is or brought up to the next level with a fresh repaint and trim freshening.
The body is extremely solid by vintage E-Body standards. Still wearing its original sheet metal is not a claim most of these cars can make. The floors, quarters, doors, etc all look great and show no obvious signs of rust or prior repair. Obviously the paint is older and in need of help. It looks good from a distance but the paint is an older low-quality respray in Lemon Twist. There are thin spots, touched up spots and scratches. Driving by it's a solid 9, up close and personal the imperfections are 'Ray Charles' obvious. The panels are straight and line up well so a repaint should be straight forward, especially with the lack of rust.
Inside the interior is mostly original and in surprisingly good condition. There is some wear but over all it is quite presentable. The carpet obviously has been changed and an aftermarket dash skin installed. The hard to find parts are all there and would not require replacement. Even the headliner looks good. The rare Rallye gauge package is all there. The tach registers about 1/2 of what it should, presumably from the MSD Tach Adapter.
Under the hood the 340 is reported to be the original, born-with engine. We will have it up on the lift next week for undercarriage pics, verify VIN and post pics. The engine has been upgraded with a larger camshaft and nickel plated headers. It has a nice lope to the idle and runs out well.
The options abound on this one. The Air Conditioning is complete but will need servicing to work properly.
The Power Steering and Power Disc Brakes work nicely. Many of the E-Body cars were drum brakes making for some hair raising stops. These Disc units work nicely. Steering, even in the tightest of parking lots is easy.
So here it is. A good looking, solid and reasonably priced E-Body with a pedigree. Good looks with plenty of room for sweat equity.
